 As we start the holiday season, take a moment to reflect on how you're going to celebrate - and get tips on how to stay in balance and keep stress at bay, by reading The Chakra Energy Diet, free for download on Amazon throughout the world this weekend.

If you're blaming yourself for not being your "perfect weight," stop. It's not your fault. Rather, the way our bodies are programmed to handle stress is the problem. Stress is a double whammy for weight - it increases our appetites and leads to overeating or poor food choices, then makes our bodies hold on to the fat. The solution is not extreme dieting, which causes more stress, but knowing how to stop the stress reactions.

STRESS, THE NOT-SO-SILENT SABOTEUR
Stress affects weight both physiologically and psychologically. We've all experienced our stomachs do a flip-flop when we're anxious. Ann Doherty, RN, CDE (certified diabetes educator), explains during her "Art of Stress Management" workshops, just what stress can do to your stomach and the rest of your body.

Physiologically, when you're under stress, your digestion is impaired and you can't receive the nourishment from the food you eat. Our bodies have developed over eons to protect ourselves from threats - whether a charging lion or an angry boss. Your brain and body prepare to handle the threat by releasing adrenaline, making you feel alert and ready for action.

When stressed, your body tries to protect itself as part of the "fight or flight" response, so your blood flows to your muscles and away from your internal organs. However, once the effects of adrenaline wear off, cortisol, known as the "stress hormone," starts signaling the body to replenish your food stores.

Cortisol is a hormone that stimulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism for fast energy, and stimulates the release of insulin to maintain blood sugar levels. So, when stress causes your cortisol to surge, your appetite will be stimulated as well. Excess cortisol also slows down your metabolism, because your body wants to maintain an adequate supply of glucose to deal with the next "threat."

Unfortunately, our bodies haven't received the update that most of us aren't fighting off wild animals anymore. We don't need extra stores of fat or glucose while we sit at our desks rushing to meet a deadline. Or when sitting on the couch worrying about the bills that just came in the mail. But, our hormones will tell our brains to reach for food anyway.

The disruption of cortisol secretion during the "fight or flight" response may not only lead to weight gain, but it can also put that weight exactly where you don't want it - in your belly. Studies have shown that stress and elevated cortisol tend to cause fat deposits in the abdominal area, which is strongly related to Syndrome X, the cluster of risk factors associated with heart disease.

Over millennia, our bodies have also been programmed to store up against famine... we're biologically adapted to want more sugar and fat, which meant survival for our ancestors. But today, there's no longer feast or famine like the hunter/gatherers encountered. And when they found food, it usually contained a high amount of nutrition and was low in calories. Our modern-day processed foods are often high in empty calories and low in nutrients, so we keep craving more and more.

If you're stressed out, make sure you get a good night's sleep, because sleep deprivation will cause biological stress and lead to food cravings, particularly for sweet and starchy foods. After nights with little sleep, I notice myself craving carbs to keep me going... until I finally collapse on my yoga mat for a nap.
Doherty reports that sleeping less than six hours per night can decrease the sensitivity of your insulin receptors, raising your insulin levels, impairing your body's ability to burn and digest fat, and increasing your risk of diabetes.

When under stress, doesn't your willpower go out the window? Most people are driven to eat comfort foods when stressed out, even if they're not hungry. And comfort foods are usually high-fat, sugary or salty foods. You may be eating whatever is within reach to fill an emotional need, or cruising to the closest fast food window because you have no time to shop and cook a healthy meal.

Balancing the Throat Chakra with Diet, Exercise and Lifestyle

The Throat Chakra is associated with communication, the ability to speak honestly, to receive and process information, to know and speak your inner truth and to listen and hear what other people are really saying. 

The Fifth Chakra: The Throat Chakra is located at the front of the throat and is associated with the thyroid and parathyroid glands in the neck. Signs of an unbalanced Throat Chakra are an inability to express oneself, feeling stagnated, and holding on to unexpressed emotions (which can manifest as holding on to excess body weight too). This can lead to frustration, inability to find the right words or even excessive talking, shyness, sore throat, stiff neck, and addictions to tobacco, street drugs, alcohol and binge eating.

When the Throat Chakra is balanced, we feel creatively inspired and able to express ourselves well. We have confidence in our beliefs and the self-confidence to share them, and the capacity to listen to others and truly hear them as well. The Throat Chakra’s balance is intimately tied to the health of the thyroid gland, which secretes hormones that control your metabolism, so a sluggish thyroid (hypothyroidism) will make it hard for you to lose weight, maintain energy, warm your hands and feet, or even stay in a positive mood. A hyperactive thyroid also causes severe metabolic and immune system problems. So foods that nourish the thyroid will also nourish the Throat Chakra.

Throat Chakra Healing Foods
– Soothing Liquids or Blue in Color
Fifth chakra foods are soothing to the throat and nourishing to the thyroid gland. There aren’t many foods in nature that are BLUE in color – but be sure to include blueberries and blackberries, as well as licorice and slippery elm bark (soothing demulcents for the throat, esophagus and stomach). Soups, especially those containing vitamin-, mineral- and fiber-containing vegetables, are especially soothing to the throat chakra. Seaweeds, like nori, wakame, dulse, arame, hijiki, kelp or kombu, contain iodine to support thyroid function and have a demulcent action on the throat.

Chew, Chew, Chew
How you eat your food is of utmost importance to the Throat Chakra, as well as to your whole digestive system. Chewing your food consciously and thoroughly will exercise the Throat Chakra and unleash the nutrients in the food for easier digestibility. Have you ever gulped down a large meal and still not felt satisfied or nourished, but rather still hungry? CHEW each bite at least 20 times, more if you have food sensitivities. It’s hard to chew and talk at the same time, so savor at least one meal per day chewing in silence and awareness. Also chew your liquids (soups and teas) to mix them with digestive-aiding enzymes found in the saliva. “Drink your food, chew your liquids,” I was taught by my Macrobiotic teachers.

Dairy products can clog your throat and the lactose in them can affect your blood sugar as well, so avoid them if you are congested. Drink plenty of water, especially first thing in the morning, to cleanse your system. My favorite menus for the Throat Chakra are ones that provide the five tastes – spicy, sour, sweet, bitter and astringent foods all in one meal, e.g., miso soup with wakame seaweed as a starter to an entrée of stir-fried vegetables over brown rice with a spicy Thai peanut sauce, and a salad with a balsamic-blueberry dressing. For dessert, I love to make a blueberry sorbet.

Taste the Healing Power of Throat Chakra Recipes

To make miso soup, sautee some sliced onions in 1 T. sesame oil. Add 2 cups of water, bring to a boil, and add a 3” strip of wakame seaweed cut up in small pieces, and other veggies such as chopped kale or carrots, then cook for 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and dissolve 1 T. of miso into the soup by stirring in the paste through a strainer. Look for non-GMO Light Yellow Miso or Chick Pea Miso in the refrigerator section of your health food store. A good source of protein and B vitamins, unpasteurized miso paste also contains friendly bacterial enzymes for your gut, and helps cleanse radiation and nicotine from the body.

For a delicious Blueberry Sorbet, just freeze blueberries and peeled bananas, then blend them together for a creamy, sweet, soothing and satisfying alternative to ice cream.

Yoga Poses for the Throat Chakra
In my Chakra Yoga Flow, I like to move from the Cobra Pose to the Lion Pose to open up Throat Chakra energy. The pose looks funny, but is very effective, especially if you feel you are getting a sore or scratchy throat. These poses can also be added to your yoga repertoire to open the Throat Chakra: the Half Shoulder Stand, Shoulder Shrugs and Circles, and the Fish pose, as well as pranayama breathing exercises.

Throat Chakra Healing Activities
Use this general affirmation or grace before cooking and eating for the Throat Chakra: “May this food bless and nourish my body and help me communicate my truth.” Sound Healing is very powerful and harmonizing for the Throat Chakra. Singing, toning and chanting are beneficial. Drumming, and any exercise involving rhythm will also help balance this chakra. I especially recommend Ecstatic Dancing and the Dances of Universal Peace where you dance while singing loving words. Walking is a perfect exercise, as it relaxes both body and mind, that anyone can do to support the Throat Chakra.

Throat Chakra Visualization

Imagine healing green light from the heart chakra moving up the spine to the throat, where it becomes a beautiful sky blue. Breathe in the blue light, then fill your lungs and let your throat open wide and sing whatever tone or note feels right… AAAH! Release any negativity and cynicism and open yourself to communicating as a holy being. You know what to say and what not to say, how to communicate well. Feel yourself singing out clear energy, loving notes, healing vibrations for yourself and the entire universe. Make yourself heard and listen well to the love that returns to you, as your audience, your universal family, stand up and clap for you.

Beat Stress and the Food Cravings that Come with It!

Whether you look to modern science or ancient wisdom, stress is seen as the root of dis-ease. According to the ancient Hawaiian Huna philosophy taught by Serge Kahili King, PhD, stress plays a part in all health problems.

According to Dr. King, stress can cause tension at the physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual level, leading to inhibited energy flow and, ultimately, illness. In my new book, THE CHAKRA ENERGY DIET, I explain how stress hormones can cause your body to not only crave food, but to store more fat. Of course, we are always going to have spikes of stress in our jobs and our lives, but we don’t want it to be chronic, and you don’t want to suppress it with addictions – whether to food, alcohol or drugs.

My mother is very ill and I found myself caring for her 24/7 until I was so stressed and exhausted that I was reaching for chocolate after chocolate - until I remembered to practice what I preach in my new book to relax. I've also gotten more health services to come to my Mom's house to give me some break time and rest... very important for caregivers to ask for help too!

For nearly twenty years, I've used yoga and meditation on a daily basis to relax my body and mind (and now that I have caregivers coming to help my mother, I have time for full sessions again), but I was excited to add in these “instant healing” techniques to keep me sane during this trying time. “Don’t eat when upset or angry.” Instead, I…

Take a Break and Breathe

Put your hands on your tummy, below your navel, and feel it rise and fall with your breath. We often breathe very shallowly or even hold our breath when we’re stressed. Simple deep belly breathing can both calm the release of stress chemicals in the body and oxygenate your cells.

Try this combination of breath and focused attention called Piko-piko breathing…

“Piko-piko is a special Hawaiian breathing technique that simultaneously relaxes and energizes the body,” says Dr. King. Using shamanic techniques and chakra colors, imagine breathing in bright yellow energy from the sun into your Solar Plexus or navel area and breathing out your stress. Or pull in inspiration from the heavens, visualizing violet or white light coming in with the breath through the Crown Chakra, and exhale your stress by breathing it out with awareness at the bottom of your feet.

“I know, I know, this seems almost too simple,” says Dr. King. “But it does work.”

How to Stop Physical Food Cravings

How can you stop a physical craving for a certain food? Dr. King recommends a technique called TFR – THINK, FEEL and RELAX. If you aren't actually hungry, but feel a strong craving for a certain food, try these steps…
  • THINK about the food you’re craving.
  • FEEL where the craving is in your body.
  • RELAX, breathing in and out of that spot.
For instance, perhaps you’re upset and craving some ice cream to cool off. THINK about the ice cream, FEEL the churning in the pit of your stomach, then RELAX by breathing in and out of your stomach area. Repeat until the craving evaporates.

If you can’t satisfy your craving, notice if it is for a food that may contain essential vitamins or minerals that you may be missing – for example, chocolate, nuts and seeds are all high in zinc and magnesium. For an antioxidant- and vitamin-rich snack, reach for a naturally sweet and fiber-filled apple.

“Think” Yourself Thin

To relieve mental stress, pay more attention to what you like, rather than what you don’t. Criticism, whether of yourself or something else, creates mental stress and then tension in your body, explains Dr. King.

So, first of all, don’t knock your body. Praise it for every step it takes in the right direction. Try self-love, rather than self-criticism, when you look in the mirror. Who would put up with a critical person barraging them all day with their negativity?

Push aside that critical voice in your head, and instead, focus on something you like about yourself – you’re a good person, with your own unique style and taste.

A good morning practice, when you first look in the mirror, is to spend a full minute focusing on everything you like about yourself…telling yourself out loud everything you like about yourself. This is a quick mental stress reliever I learned from Dr. King called “Saturation Praise.”

Also praise everyone and everything else that represents your goal – if you want to be thinner, praise thin people, telephone poles, etc. If you want more curves, praise Sophia Vergara, fluffy clouds, and pillows.

Don’t Push Down Uncomfortable Emotions

On the emotional level, anger is often tied to inflammatory processes which damage the body, one of only many reasons to practice forgiveness. If something is gnawing at you, rather than trying to calm yourself with food, decide to let it go.

Dr. King taught me a simple anger-release technique: Place one hand on an area of your body where you feel tension or inflammation, and point the other hand toward the earth, which can absorb your angst, and say, “Whatever this is related to, I release it and let it go forever” until the tension and pain eases.

Undigested emotions can lead to your body holding on to weight as well as anger or fear. Release your emotions and stop what’s eating you. There are many reasons to forgive (even if you can’t forget) transgressions – because anger only hurts YOU.

You’re Already Complete and Connected

On the spiritual level, tension can come from feeling isolated or separate, and the antidote can be as easy as meditating. Dr. King suggests trying a nalu meditation, focusing for a minute on something beautiful. You will soon feel a sense of relaxation come over you and a greater connection to spirit, your higher self, or God (work with your own beliefs about this).

Once you’re in that relaxed state, it’s a good time to express gratitude for the good in your life or to ask for inspiration. When you have ideal health or reach your perfect weight, what would you like to achieve and share with the world?

Embracing the “Relaxation Response”

As you address your stress, and practice relaxation responses, your metabolism will improve, it will be easier to make nourishing food choices vs. struggling with willpower, and your body will look and feel better.

I hope you’ve seen how relaxing your stress responses allows you to better digest your food, helping you achieve your perfect body. All of these tools shared here, plus all the info in THE CHAKRA ENERGY DIET, will assist you in balancing your digestive and hormonal systems, your mind, your emotions, your spirit, and yes, your chakras.

Root Chakra Menu Plan - What to Eat and How to Exercise for Grounding

Q. How should I start THE CHAKRA ENERGY DIET if more than one of my chakras is out of balance?

A. The Root Chakra is always a good place to start, and then work your way up to the Sacral Chakra the next week. There's no need to rush through the chakras, trying to balance each one in a day. Take a week to ground yourself in the safety and security of the Root Chakra, then depending on your answers to the Quiz in THE CHAKRA ENERGY DIET, move on to the next chakra that needs balancing.

In order to balance your chakras and promote optimal health and vitality, it’s important to cut out inflammatory foods, such as sugar, simple carbs (like bread and other flour products), dairy products and alcohol - which all play havoc with your blood sugar, especially during the first week, as you get your feet firmly planted on the ground. The Root Chakra is all about feeling safe and secure, personally as well as financially and socially.

round yourself with lean protein sources (choose as many vegetarian options as possible) and lots and lots of root vegetables like beets, carrots and radishes. You can also add in vegetable smoothies to get at least 8-10 servings/day. During the first two weeks, it’s important to go off the foods you may normally crave - addictive sugar and simple carbs, even fruit. By the third week, you can add in whole grains and fruit to support your Solar Plexus Chakra.

Also, take time every day for at least a few minutes in nature to ground yourself. Practice a Nalu Meditation (stare at something beautiful for a minute or until you feel relaxed) or o the Circle of Joy Breath, inhaling and exhaling deeply to open your chest, heart and lungs.

Menu Plan for the Root Chakra
Have three meals/day, each containing 20% lean protein and 80% low-starch vegetables - from large green salads containing organic lettuces and arugula, with tomatoes, beets, cucumbers, celery, sprouts, carrots, radishes, bell peppers and avocados, to steamed green vegetables such as kale, chard, spinach, broccoli, green beans, to brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and asparagus.

Sample Breakfast
Smoothie or Juice of beets, carrots and kale followed by scrambled eggs or tofu mixed with veggies like red bell peppers, broccoli, red onion, seasoned with tumeric and Bragg Liquid Aminos.

Sample Lunch
Large Green Salad filled with nutrition-packed dark romaine or other organic lettuce, raw veggies with high-protein beans, peas, fish or poultry on top. Add a dash of Olive Oil/vinegar, spices & herbs (no bottled dressings).

Sample Dinner
Chicken & Veggie Stirfry
Saute any lean meat or fish with kale, carrots, onions, garlic, cauliflower or other veggies. Season with herbs, spices and Bragg Liquid Aminos.

A Chocolate Meditation

HAPPY EASTER! If you’ve received chocolate in your Easter basket, here’s a way to use it as a healing tool. I hope you enjoy this Chocolate Meditation from shaman, Stewart Blackburn, author of The Skills of Pleasure.

Take a small piece of the chocolate, hold it in your hands and give thanks for it. Feel its shape and texture. Then smell it. Take your time and get as much sensory information from it as you can without putting it into your mouth. Note how you feel in anticipation of eating this chocolate.

Let each breath help you to relax into this experience. This about being as thoroughly in your body as you can, present to all you perceive.

With great consciousness and flair, put the chocolate into your mouth and focus your full attention on the sensations you experience in your mouth. Feel it melt and move around in your mouth. Be aware of the sweetness on your tongue, the creaminess in your mouth, and all of the delicious flavors present. Prolong the experience as much as you can while being aware of how it makes you feel emotionally. See how deeply you can enjoy this chocolate, from savoring just one small piece.

Chocolate, unless you’re a sugar addict (which is more common than you might think) can help revive a brain taxed by overthinking or overuse of psychic skills. To enjoy chocolate in a healthy way that balances your Third Eye Chakra, choose organic 70% cacao dark chocolate and savor a small piece, chewing it slowly and consciously, for best effect.

The Throat Chakra - Open to Your  Inner Truth through Diet & Exercise

If you want to transform and change into your True Self, you'll want to use The Chakra Diet to help balance your Throat Chakra.

The Throat Chakra, the fifth chakra, is associated with communication, the ability to speak honestly, to receive and process information, to know and speak our inner truth.

Signs of an unbalanced Throat Chakra are an inability to express yourself, feeling stagnated, and holding on to unexpressed emotions (which can manifest as holding on to excess body weight too). This can lead to frustration, inability to find the right words or even excessive talking, shyness, sore throat, stiff neck, and addictions like smoking, alcohol and binge eating.

When the Throat Chakra is balanced, we feel creatively inspired and able to express ourselves well. We have confidence in our beliefs and the self-confidence to share them, and the capacity to listen to others and truly hear them as well.

The Throat Chakra’s balance is intimately tied into the health of the thyroid gland, located in the throat area. The thyroid secretes hormones that control your metabolism, so a sluggish thyroid (hypothyroidism) will make it hard for you to lose weight, maintain energy, warm your hands and feet, or even stay in a positive mood. A hyperactive thyroid also causes severe metabolic and immune system problems. So foods that nourish the thyroid will also nourish the Throat Chakra.

Foods, especially that share colors with the chakras, carry vibrations that can activate or balance your chakras. The Throat Chakra is associated with the color blue.

Throat Chakra Healing Foods: Fifth chakra foods are soothing to the throat and nourishing to the thyroid gland. Those that are blue or deep red in color include blueberries, blackberries, grapes and cherries. Soups, especially those containing vitamin-and mineral- and fiber-containing vegetables, will be especially soothing to the throat chakra. Seaweeds, like kelp or kombu, contain iodine to support thyroid function and have a demulcent action on the throat.

Dairy products and sugar can clog your throat and wreak havoc with your blood sugar as well, so are best avoided. Drink plenty of water, especially first thing in the morning to cleanse your system. Try the herbal sugar substitute Stevia and herbal teas instead of sodas.

Chewing your food consciously and thoroughly will also exercise the Throat Chakra and unleash the nutrients in the food for easier digestibility. Have you ever gulped down a large meal and still not felt satisfied or nourished, but even still hungry? I recommend chewing each bite 20 times, more if you have food allergies. It’s hard to chew and talk at the same time, so I choose to savor at least one meal per day chewing in silence and awareness.

Yoga Poses for the Throat Chakra: Add these poses to your yoga repertoire to open the throat chakra: the Half Shoulder Stand, Shoulder Shrugs and Circles, the Fish and the Lion pose.

Throat Chakra Healing Activities: Walking is a perfect exercise to support the Throat Chakra, as it evens out inconsistent energies in the body and relaxes the mind. Singing and dancing, drumming, and any exercise involving rhythm will help balance this chakra. I especially recommend Ecstatic Dancing and the Dances of Universal Peace where you dance while singing truth (loving words). Chanting is also a very powerful method of sound healing.

When we balance our chakras, we craft our lives the way we want them to be, rather than living in constant reaction to forces outside of us. These spirals of energy are wheels that heal, feeding the body good energy and profoundly affecting our metabolism, as well as emotions, sensations and behaviors.

My favorite recipes for the Throat Chakra are ones that provide the five tastes – spicy, sour, sweet, bitter and astringent foods all in one meal… e.g., miso soup with wakame seaweed, an entrée of stir-fried vegetables over Forbidden black rice with a spicy sauce, and a salad with a sweet-sour balsamic-blueberry dressing.

Balance the Heart Chakra with Diet and Exercise

You feel love when you give love. And you need an open, balanced Heart Chakra to be the compassionate, loving person that is the real you. If you agree with more than 4 or 5 of the following statements, you may want to look at ways to heal your Heart Chakra…

Heart Chakra Questionnaire (Check those statement you agree with.)
  1. I often put others ahead of myself.
  2. I’m tired from being a caregiver.
  3. I’m angry and resentful about the way I’ve been treated.
  4. I find it hard to forgive or let go of hurt feelings.
  5. I’m very empathic – feeling other’s feelings.
  6. My heart has been broken.
  7. I have heart problems (hypertension or high cholesterol).
  8. I have lung problems (asthma, allergies or frequent coughs).
  9. I have problems in my love life.
  10. I feel numb and a loss of passion.
  11. I release my stress by connecting with friends or family.
  12. I don’t get enough hugs, kisses or massages.
  13. I often get heartburn after eating.
  14. I don’t really like vegetables.
  15. Relationship problems cause me to overeat.

Located at the center of your chest, the fourth chakra, the Heart Chakra, is associated with the physical organs – the heart and lungs. If your Heart Chakra is blocked or imbalanced, you may experience physical issues with these organs, such as hypertension or respiratory ailments, or feel pain in the upper back and shoulders. You may feel emotional insensitivity, sorrow, depression, resentment, or dependency on nicotine or marijuana.

When the Heart Chakra is balanced, you are able to feel love, openly giving and receiving it. You are able to be compassionate without taking on other’s feelings. You can let go of sadness, release old resentments, forgive yourselves and others, and move forward with emotional empowerment.

The Heart Chakra is the bridge between the lower three chakras – the Root Chakra which relates to our safety and security; the Sacral Chakra, which relates to our creativity and sexuality; the Solar Plexus Chakra, which is the base of our personal power and identity; and the higher three chakras – the Throat Chakra, which is associated with speaking our truth; the Third Eye Chakra, which opens us to our higher knowing and intuition; and the Crown Chakra, our connection to spirit.

Heart Chakra Healing Foods: While the first three chakras are fed by protein, fats and carbohydrates, the Heart Chakra is balanced through phytochemicals or macronutrients, especially those in green vegetables. The rising energy imparted by leafy greens, for instance, feeds our expansion, growth and opening in all directions, like the feeling of love and a willingness to give of ourselves.

Foods, especially that share colors with the chakras, carry vibrations that can activate or balance your chakras. So, nourish your Heart Chakra with the many green vegetables – from kale, spinach, chard, collard, dandelion and mustard greens, to lettuce and sprouts of all kinds, and nourishing and health-protective cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, Brussel sprouts and cauliflower. There’s also bok choy, cabbage, arugula, green peas and peppers, leeks and green onions, watercress, zucchini, celery, and more. Take a stroll through your local Farmer’s Market and appreciate the abundance of green veggies and choose your favorites, then open up and try some new ones. Ask how to best prepare them and savor their delicious flavors.

Also, include green fruit in your diet, from green apples, pears, grapes and kiwi, to that best salad ingredient of all – avocados.

Heart Chakra Healing Activities: You can strengthen the healing effect of your food by adding in some green veggies at each meal, for instance, adding some leafy greens to your morning smoothie or green peppers in your omelet, having a large salad at lunch, and steaming broccoli or zucchini for your side dish at dinner. Make your meal with love and gratitude, for the people who grew your food, to the people you will share it with. Say grace before meals, such as this one suggested by Shakti Gawain: “May this food bless and nourish my body, and keep me at my ideal weight.”

We often overeat to fill a feeling of emptiness or lack of love. If sharing food is one of the major ways your mother has expressed her love to you, or you to your family, think of other ways to feed the longing of your own heart, rather than with food.  Instead, pamper yourself with a massage or social activity, or reach out to others through volunteer work.

Exercising with others is recommended for the Heart Chakra. Join in a yoga class, a team sport, an aerobics or spin class at the gym, take a walk with a friend or partner, or play catch with your children.

Healing Visualization: One of my favorite visualizations if I’m feeling a relationship problem, is to imagine playing catch with the person I’m having difficulty with. In your mind’s eye, see a person you are having a problem with. See if they catch the ball and throw it back. If not, surround the game of catch or relationship with a green glow, send that person love and forgiveness, and through magical thinking, have them throw the ball back and forth with you. And then catch yourself smiling.

Heart Chakra Recipes: One of my favorite, easy recipes for the Heart Chakra is sauteed kale. First, I slice and sautee an onion and some garlic, add chopped kale and cook until tender. Top with seasonings of your choice – my family loves it mixed with some vinagrette dressing. These days, you can pick up Kale Chips as a snack almost everywhere, a great replacement for less healthy potato chips. Or make your own…

Homemade Kale Chips:
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F.
  2. Rinse and dry a bunch of kale (organic is best) and sprinkle with olive oil and sea salt. Massage the oil and salt into the kale leaves with your hands.
  3. Fill 2 large rimmed baking sheets with a single layer of kale and bake for 8-10 minutes or until the leaves are crisp. Eat immediately or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
